Since there's so much to see, we thought we'd help you out with our Top 5 picks for Port Adelaide's finest (and free) attractions.
1. PORT CANAL MONTHLY CARNIVAL
From 10am to 4pm on the first Saturday of each month, Port Canal Shopping Centre brings you a free all-ages Super Saturday Carnival and Sale event for the whole family to enjoy! With new entertainment every month, there’s face painting, carnival rides, a jumping castle, live entertainment, glorious displays and loads more mega fun for the kids while adults will love the super sale inside the mall with big bargains to be found!
2. HART’S MILL PLAYGROUND
This play space reopened in 2014 after undergoing a $2 million refurbishment to create a playground wonderland for all ages to adore. Treat the family to a lovely lunch outdoors with Hart’s Mill Playground’s BBQ, Table and Shelter facilities and sit back and relax while the kids explore and embrace this playground’s flying fox, large spinning wheel, swings, mouse/hamster wheel, tower with a slide, climbing frames and sand play station and sandpit which contain soft fall flooring for safety. This fenced playground is filled with brightly coloured play equipment making it very hard to miss. The playground embodies scattered reminders of South Australia’s longest (1855-1980) serving flour mill throughout, while being beautifully positioned among Hart Mill’s historic buildings and sits near the Inner Harbour Loop Path. Well worth a visit.
3. PORT ADELAIDE LOOP PATH
Grab your sneakers, get on your bike and brace yourself for some marvellous sites ahead! Port Adelaide’s Loop Path offers 2.2 kilometres of pure bliss that both pedestrians and cyclists alike will treasure, ranging from the Hart Mill precinct up until the lovely Jervois Bridge. During this path, you’ll see both modern and historical architecture with riveting views including Newport Quays, Semaphore Road, the wastelands previously known as the Colonial Sugar Refinery Wharf, various memorabilia from maritime history, Musgrave Wharf and even more beauty.
4. DOLPHIN SPOTTING
Save that trip to the aquarium for later because Port Adelaide’s Port River is the real deal. Port River is part of Adelaide’s precious Dolphin Sanctuary and it was last reported as home to 40 Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins whom wildly inhabit its water. This is one unique destination where you’ll witness wild dolphins up close and true to their natural, unrestrained form as they live within a major city - a world rarity. You can even catch a beautifully intimate viewpoint of these wild dolphins via the Port Adelaide Loop Path, perfect for making the most out of your walk or cycle.
5. PORT ADELAIDE LIBRARY
Don’t let its collection of books fool you because this Library is also home to some of the best events at the Port! The City of Port Adelaide Enfield Library hosts several assorted events each month where each proves great value as both highly beneficial and entertaining for the community. These include Language Courses, Book Club, Preschool Storytime, Kids’ Club, Basic PC Training and much more.
Don't delay, grab your family and friends and book it in your diary! First Saturday of every month, make Port Canal Carnivals your free family day out.
