Notorious for being the most fearsome pirate, well, ever, Blackbeard is featured in all his glory in this made-for-TV movie. Based on the true story of Edward Teach, the pirate who would become the infamous Blackbeard, you get an up close and personal look at the man who killed for the reputation" – and subsequently earned a reputation that became legend. Geena Davis stars as Morgan Adams in this action comedy, proving that women can pull their weight in the world of pirates, too. Assisted by her slave William Shaw (Matthew Modine), Morgan is on a mission to find three sections of a treasure map, with one of the sections in the possession of her ferocious Uncle Dawg (Frank Langella). In addition to the wrath of Dawg, Morgan is pitted against a crew that’s poised for mutiny as well as the British crown’s efforts to end her raiding ways.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
With five movies spanning from 2003 to 2017, our list would be totally remiss without including the Pirates of Caribbean series. Starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, the movies take viewers on a wild ride where the pirates are actually the good guys. They represent freedom from oppressive ruling powers, depicted as versions of the British Empire, Spanish Empire and East India Company. Based on the Walt Disney theme park ride of the same name, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has spawned countless McDonald’s Happy Meal toys while helping to solidify Depp as a household name.
TREASURE ISLAND (1972)
Long John Silver may be as well-known a pirate as Blackbeard, and Long John gets his due in this top pirate movie starring Orson Welles. As an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure novel, the movie tells the story of the remarkable encounter between a young Jim Hawkins and the pirate Long John Silver. While an array of movies have brought Stevenson’s novel to the big screen, reviewers have pegged the 1972 adaptation as the “definitive version” that best captures the darkness, adventure and overall spirit of the book.
Keep the pirate vibe alive by checking out the movies, dressing up like a pirate, and landing at the The Pirates of Port Adelaide festival 23 and 24 September 2017.
